Tonight is Christmas Eve and hundreds of kids appeared out the front of my girlfriend’s home. They were waiting for Olénchero, the Basque Santa, I asked Luisa what was the story behind Olénchero, she said ‘He lives in the mountains and mines for coal’ then She paused ‘Actually he is a drunk guy. He comes down from the mountains and throws chestnuts at the children.’

Minutes later the kids started screaming and Olénchero appeared. He was being carried by six or seven people, his face was black from the coal and he was smoking a big pipe.
